So, this is a segment that I just thought I would do. Maybe, if possible, if there is enough material, this may become something regular. If not, thats too bad for our race, or maybe just my race, depending on who’s reading.
This is something that I just found out recently, though it supposedly is not all too recent news. For those who do not know, the Heat stunk last season. ALSO for those who do not know, Pat Riley stepped down near the end of the season saying that he would focus on his other duties as President of the Miami Heat organization. You would think that maybe the Heat would go after a big name from the Pro’s or even one from the College level. You would think that, wouldn’t you? Apparently because the Heat did so bad, the Miami organization has become so desperate for some luck that they are banking on the famed luck of the Asians.
But seriously, last week the Heat named Erik Spoelstra their new head coach. This is significant not only because he took the title of youngest coach in the league at 37 from Lawrence Frank of the Nevw Jersey Nets, but also because to my knowledge (nothing I have seen, heard or read has confirmed this) he is also the first Asian head coach in the history of the NBA which is pretty cool considering he is not inheriting a team of schmucks. This is a team that went to and won a finals a couple years ago and was contending as recently as last season. Granted the Heat right now are very different from either of these teams, but the Heat hae the Number 2 pick in the draft, Dwyane Wade, Shawn Marion, and low expectations which is probably a recipe for success to somebody.
Erik Spoelstra joins the ranks of Hines Ward, Norm Chow, Dat Nguyen, Michael Chang, and Olin Kruetz (bet you didn’t know he was Asian) as random cool Asian sports people that all Asians should rejoice and cheer for whenever they see.
If you’re more interested or are really cynical and think I’m pulling your internet leg, here’s the official NBA.com link: http://www.nba.com/heat/news/riley_spoelstra_080428.html
